Four Reasons Why You Should Chose Concrete over Asphalt for Your Driveway

When considering driveway replacement or deciding what type of driveway to install for your new home construction there are many options to consider including pavers, gravel, stamped concrete driveways, turf and brick, but the two most frequently considered come down to asphalt and concrete driveways.

In areas of extreme heat asphalt can soften, become gooey & sticky and thus suffer from durability issues.  In areas way up north, where extreme cold is the norm, concrete can more easily crack creating a scenario where aesthetics and strength decline.  However, for the rest of us, including folks like us from Westlake, Cleveland, Avon Lake, Elyria, Sheffield, Sandusky, Huron, Amherst, and basically all of northeast Ohio where we have mostly moderate temperatures, pouring concrete sidewalks, floors, basements, walkways, and especially driveways is the best way to go.

While there are advantages to each type of driveway, Keith Oberg Jr. – Lead Project Manager of Concrete Services for Paraprin Construction – broke down four reasons why concrete construction is the best option even though concrete cost per yard can be slightly more than asphalt – and here’s why:

  1. Durability: When comparing the two materials, concrete is more durable & long-lasting compared to asphalt. While with good and frequent maintenance asphalt can last up to 30-years, concrete can withstand heavy loads, resist cracking, settling and other forms of damage throughout its lifespan which can last 50-years or more.
  2. Low Maintenance: Asphalt, to squeeze out as much lifespan as possible, needs constant and regular maintenance to protect it from damage caused by weather, sunlight, chemicals, and regular usage. Poured concrete driveways, on the other hand, require minimal maintenance to achieve maximum longevity. Additionally, driveway resurfacing, concrete leveling, concrete epoxy and other materials and techniques can be used to repair the surface & extend its utility to the maximum.
  3. Customization: While asphalt can be coated with different colors of sealants, concrete can be customized in many styles with a multitude of techniques to fit the look of any home or business. Stamped concrete, texturing, and stained concrete can help tell your home’s story, improve its appearance and, perhaps most importantly, add to its value. Additionally, a concrete overlay can be applied over an existing concrete surface to give it a fresh new look.
  4. Environmentally Friendly: While some chemicals are used in producing concrete, the primary ingredients tossed around in the cement mixer are cement, water, air, sand, and gravel. Conversely, asphalt requires petroleum products to produce and maintain & cannot be recycled at the end of its useful life. Recycled concrete can be turned into the base for roads, driveways, parking lots, backfill material and shoulder stone.

If you have a cracked concrete driveway looking for repair, looking to pour a brand-new driveway, or have any other concrete projects you need done, hiring a reliable, experienced, and trusted professional concrete contractor is your best option to ensure the longevity, durability, and aesthetic appeal is all maximized.
