Four Great Landscaping Design Ideas to Get the Most Out of Small Backyards

Four Great Landscaping Design Ideas to Get the Most Out of Small Backyards

Backyard dimensions have endless possibilities and depending on what your back yard’s size and shape is there will be numerous types of landscaping designs you can consider. And the landscaping design you implement will have a direct impact on the frequency of regular lawn maintenance that will be required to sustain it and what your landscaping cost will be.

For those with limited space & small backyards, it’s important that the landscape designs you implement takes advantage of all the available space in a way that satisfies your desired look and planned use.

Paraprin Landscaping’s Lead Project Manager, Zach James, pointed out that there are a plethora of landscaping features and techniques, based on individual preferences, that can be applied to transform your backyard, bring it to life, maximize its space, and make it uniquely yours.

Below is four of Zach’s favorite landscaping designs that work well in small backyards.

  • Short Hedges: Planting short hedges can help segment your backyard to create more perceived size and designated spaces for things like entertaining, flower beds, and vegetable gardens. They also have a classic look, add character, and beautiful greenscapes to your backyard lawn.
  • Surround Home with Flowers: Turning the perimeter of your home into a colorful flower garden is a great way to enhance the size and perceived depth of your home landscaping while adding to its character and beauty. Growing perennial plants in your flower bed is a great way to brighten the outside of your home with an abundance of hues.
  • Vegetable Gardens: The use of raised garden beds, planters, and living walls or fences to grow vertical gardens can produce a cool looking vegetable garden that will serve multiple purposes in your landscape. It brings aesthetics and ambiance to your backyard in addition to the utility in growing your own vegetables. The use of hardscape like building walkways around your garden with stamped concrete, pavers, pea gravel, brick or the material that best suits your preferences will refine your backyard and add further distinction to it.
  • Use Shrubs, Trees, Living Walls for Privacy: The implementation of living walls, shrubs or planting small tress in your yard such as arborvitaes to segment off your backyard & its living space is a great way to create a cozy, comfy and private feel even when your neighbors are close.

Simple landscaping can be just as effective as complex and costly landscaping when done the right way and created for the right space. One way to ensure your yard design achieves desired results and is built to last is to consult with a trusted local landscaper. Rather it be regular mowing as part of a lawn care maintenance plan, sod installation, or something more complex like a stamped concrete patio and sprinkler system installation, partnering with a knowledgeable landscaping company will ensure you’ve considered all your options and give you the confidence that your landscaping vision becomes an awesome reality.

Five Reasons to be Excited You Chose a Ranch | New Home Construction

Five Reasons to be Excited You Chose a Ranch

You’ve made a huge decision on your family’s future – you’re partnering with a local homebuilder to build your dream home. You’ve consider small but important details like which elevation and color scheme to choose and more consequential decisions like whether to live in a new subdivision or build on your own lot. One of the most exciting aspects of the new home construction process is deciding which of the homebuilder optional features you want to add to the design and what floorplan will work best for you & your family.

After evaluating your family’s lifestyle, touring newly built houses & model homes, and hiring the best new home construction company for your needs you’ve decided that when you build your home – it’s going to be a ranch.

Be excited – there are many great benefits to you & your family for living in a ranch style home. While the list could be much longer, here are five of the most terrific reasons to build a ranch home.

  • Accessibility & Safety: Ranch style floorplans, with some of their most notable design features including single-story & open floorplans, makes them easily accessible for people of all ages and abilities. At the same time, the lack of stairs throughout the house makes it safer for children, the elderly, and those prone to falls.
  • Customization, Flexibility & Adaptability: Ranch style floorplans offer tons of flexibility & customization to please a wide variety of personal preferences. Ranch built homes can come in many shapes – L’s, T’s and U’s being among the most popular – and sizes with various types of floorplans to best suit your family’s lifestyles and taste. And they’re highly adaptable in two ways. 1) Architectural design to fit any style or climate no matter if you live out west in the desert or along the coast of Lake Erie in Sandusky, Ohio – ranches can be built to suit any backdrop and… 2) Ranches, given their single-story design, are easier to put on additional rooms and make structural changes than their two-story counterparts.
  • Affordability: According to HomeBuyer.com ranches, despite often requiring more roofing and foundation space, tend to have “simpler and more concise” layouts and thus typically reduce the cost to build a new home versus other styles. For example, HomeBuyer.com says ranches are $150 per square foot to construct vs. $300 per square foot for a colonial on average. Additionally, ranches are known for being, both, single story and for allowing in more natural light which can positively impact your monthly utility expenses.
  • Natural Light & Views: Typically built as single-story homes, ranches are well known for allowing in natural light which can create a warm and inviting feel as well as offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape. No matter if you live near the mountains, ocean, or suburban housing development – wherever you are – most ranches will provide a wide variety of great views of areas around your home.
  • Resale Value: According to MarketWatch.com ranch homes are among the best when it comes to resale value. Several factors which include single floor living, lower maintenance cost, accessibility and flexibility are just a few of the reasons why.

If you’re in the market for new home construction in Lorain County, Cuyahoga County, Erie County, and any community in northern Ohio, Paraprin Construction is at the top of the list of best house builders you should trust to build your home.

And if you’re considering single floor living, Paraprin Construction invites you to check out their ranch floorplan, The Fremont.

With an open floorplan taking advantage of all the living space 2,315 square feet provides and with vaulted ceilings, this inviting yet sprawling ranch home comes standard with 3-bedrooms, 2-full baths, a full basement (unfinished) and 2-car garage.

Optional features include 3-elevations & color schemes to choose from, 4th-bedroom/dining room option, morning room, corner fireplace and 3-car garage so you can customize the house to match your family’s needs and desires.

Paraprin Construction is well pleased to announce they are now accepting phase 1 lot reservations at Cold Creek Crossing in Sandusky, Ohio where you can choose between The Fremont or our two-story floorplan with a loft, The Sheffield, while taking advantage of the city of Sandusky’s 10-year tax abatement.

Five Advantages of Loft-Style Floorplans to Consider When You Build a Home

Five Advantages of Loft-Style Floorplans to Consider When You Build a Home

While building a new house is an exciting time for you & your family, one of the most thrilling aspects of designing a new build is picking out its floorplan.

When making that decision there are numerous floorplan designs to choose from. The key is determining which one best suits your family’s lifestyle, needs, and budget. Open floorplans that take advantage of the home’s space, ranch floorplans that are ideal for single floor living, and colonial floorplans that often provide symmetry in its design are just a few of the options you can chose from, including custom homes which makes for limitless floorplan possibilities.  Each have their own pros & cons as they relate to your needs & desires.

For those who have decided to build your own house or partner with a local homebuilder on a loft style floorplan, you already know there are many good reasons to do so. However, for those of you still pondering which floorplan design that is best for you, here are five of the best advantages to living in & owning a home with a loft floorplan concept.

  • Open & Airy Feel: No matter what the home’s square footage is, if you know someone with a loft concept in their home or have visited model homes with one, one of the first things you notice is high ceilings, often large windows, and the feeling of spaciousness that it accompanies. Loft homes, especially in conjunction with an open floorplan, truly takes advantage of all the home’s space, has an inviting quality about it, and promotes natural lighting throughout your home.
  • Versatility: Arguably the most beneficial aspect about new home construction or buying a house with a loft concept is the variety of ways a family can use the space in a style that works best for them. It can be used as a second family room, gaming room for the kids, office for the work from home professional, additional bedroom for family or guests, an exercise room for staying in shape, and a bar or recreation space for those who like to entertain family and friends. These are just a handful of potential uses for your loft space & there are many more. It’s no wonder many recently sold & newly built houses have had implemented a loft into the designs.
  • Aesthetics: Loft style homes look awesome! We’ve already discussed the open & airy feel a loft style concept creates in a home, but there are many other ways it can add to its visual appeal. From exposed brick walls, to adding reclaimed barn wood planks, and other industrial, antique, or modern fixtures that you can install – your loft style home can be uniquely yours, have the look you desire, and an elegance your friends will admire.
  • Costs & Value: The cost to build a new home is not greatly impacted by choosing a loft over an additional bedroom for example. In fact, an additional benefit to a loft is that it can be less expensive to construct since there are no need for doors or closets. When it comes to resale, many Realtors would agree that lofts are attractive options for all types of buyers. And in houses that have undergone a loft conversion, Homes & Gardens share data that indicates these homes have a resale value up to 20% greater than homes without.
  • Balance of Centrality & Privacy: A loft equals more space which means more privacy for you and your family. Many loft style floorplans, especially in newly built homes, tend to be centrally located in the house which makes it an ideal place for people to gather and if necessary, easier to keep an eye on people like young children for example. By definition, a loft is a space on an upper level of your home, typically not on the same level as the main living area, that can be used in a variety of ways. Being on an upper level, the loft gives you living space away from the main area of the home, but with accessibility to the rest of the home and family that the centrality of a loft can provide.

The Sheffield is Paraprin Construction’s two-story, open floorplan with a loft, cathedral ceilings, full basement, and island kitchen. At 2,820 square feet of above grade living space, you will marvel at the home’s depth, spaciousness, and open & airy feeling. With standard features including four large bedrooms that incorporates a first-floor master and three bathrooms (2-full, 1-half), this semi-custom home offers several optional features that will make it the perfect house for you & your family to call home.  Among the optional features are three elevations & three color schemes to create the curb appeal you desire, formal dining room/home office option, morning room, corner fireplace, finished basement, and a third car garage.

The Sheffield is one of two floorplans along with The Fremont – our ranch floorplan– under new home construction at the serene & tranquil community of Cold Creek Crossing in Sandusky.  If you’re thinking of a new home in Erie County, Ohio and interested in more information, visiting one of the model homes, or ready to begin building your brand new home – give us a call for a zero-obligation conversation at (440) 523-8254.

New Home Construction: What to Consider Before Breaking Ground

New Home Construction: What to Consider Before Breaking Ground

Deciding to build a home is one of the most important endeavors of your life.  It’s the place you and your family will call home and a huge investment of both time and money. It’s no surprise that there’s a lot of research to be done and many nuances to consider before the dream of building your own home becomes a reality.

Dave Linna, Paraprin Construction’s Senior Project Manager over new house construction, has 35-years’ experience, countless custom built homes under his belt, and has helped guide numerous people through their new home construction process. There’s not one scenario he hasn’t seen as a homebuilder which makes his advice & guidance incredibly valuable and we’re lucky being able to share it here:

  1. Experience: Chose a home construction company with a track record of success in building quality homes in your area. If you’re looking for a builder in northeast Ohio, in addition to Dave Linna, Paraprin Construction and their clients are lucky to have Chief Operating Officer, Jon Sherer, in their corner. Jon, in multiple roles with some of the most respected and recognized national builders, has led the new home construction process for literally thousands of builds, making he and Dave ideal leaders for anyone choosing a homebuilder.
  2. Local Knowledge & Communication: The best home construction companies know building codes & regulations, environmental factors, proper materials to use for your climate and location, and the most reliable subcontractors that will help ensure your home is built to the highest possible standard. Of course, knowledge is useless to your clients if you don’t have the will or ability to clearly communicate it, as well as keep them informed throughout the new house construction process.
  3. Seeing is Believing: Visit model homes constructed by the builder to gauge its aesthetics, quality, functionality and if it fits you & your family’s overall vision of its next home.
  4. Location: Proximity to schools, work, family, and amenities are critically important in determining where to build. Another location factor is what setting do you desire to build on & what that means for the type of home you’re going to build. Planned communities in suburban subdivisions versus the plan to build on you lot with a custom home offers slightly different approaches and affect the cost to build a new home. From farmhouse builders, green home builders to residential construction companies that focus on urban infill lots and design – identifying the right house and the right location will help inform your decision on hiring the best homebuilder in your area to fit your needs. Speaking of location – if you’re in Sandusky, Vermilion, Huron and anywhere near Erie County, Ohio -and thinking of building a new home – check out the Cold Creek Crossing community in Sandusky featuring two of Paraprin Construction’s semi custom homes: The Fremont, the ranch offering and The Sheffield, the two-story floorplan with a loft – each with customizable features so you can make it your own.
  5. Budget: Determine your budget for the overall cost to build your home factoring in land acquisition, construction fees, materials, and furnishings. You’ll also want to think about life after the new home construction is complete in terms of your monthly payment, taxes, and utilities and how that relates to you and your family’s monthly budget.
  6. Size & Floorplan: The size of the home in terms of square feet, number of bathrooms & bedrooms, and other spaces needed for work, play, and you and your family’s overall lifestyle need to be determined. The overall layout is important too.  For example, many people prefer open floorplan concepts to take advantage of the structure’s space or a first-floor master bedroom & laundry room that’s ideal for single floor living.  All these preferences vary family to family, the floorplan offerings can vary builder to builder, and of course, the floorplan, size, and layout you chose will have a direct effect on the cost to build a new home.
  7. Building Materials: Chose the type of building materials that match the desires for your new home considering factors such as durability, aesthetics, sustainability, and cost. Paraprin Construction prides itself on being a homebuilder dedicated to quality in terms of contractors, vendors and building materials. For example, our new home construction at Cold Creek Crossing in Sandusky, Ohio includes the installation of Pella windows as a standard feature.
  8. Mechanical Systems / Energy Efficiency: Windows, doors, insulation, heating & cooling systems, and whether to install renewable energy systems are important aspects of how your new home will look and operate. This goes hand in hand with size, floorplan, materials, and systems and will be impacted by the size and budget for the new home.

As evident by this conversation, the decision to build your own home is complex, important, and an extremely personal choice that must account for many factors and potential outcomes.  Partnering with a trusted and reputable homebuilder in your area is the best thing you can do to help ensure you’re satisfied once your new home construction site becomes you and your family’s primary hub.  Paraprin Construction, led by Dave Linna and Jon Sherer and with undying commitment to quality, consistency, craftsmanship and first-class customer service, is who you can trust to help turn the vision of your dream home into a reality.

If you’re planning to build a home in towns such as Rocky River, Westlake, North Olmsted, Olmsted Falls, Bay Village, Avon, Avon Lake, North Ridgeville, Columbia Station, Strongsville, Lorain, Elyria, Grafton, Oberlin, Amherst, Vermilion, Huron, Sandusky, and nearby towns in northeast Ohio we would love to help.

Call/Text: 440-523-8254 for a ZERO obligation conversation including but not limited to interest in homes at Cold Creek Crossing, custom home design & build, building on your land, or anything else – please reach out any time.

Landscaping Projects You Can Complete in the Winter

Landscaping Projects You Can Complete in the Winter

As we glide through February and set our sights on the extended daylight hours and warmth of spring, many of us begin to formulate our landscaping design & lawn maintenance plans for the year.

While planning your landscaping budget, garden designs, evaluating landscaping companies you might work with, and prioritizing summer lawncare projects are all critical parts of achieving your goals, there are several things you can do now, in the winter, many that are cost effective, can be knocked out in a reasonable amount of time, and are yard maintenance and lawncare tasks that have to be done before other projects can begin.

Zach James, Paraprin Construction’s Landscaping Project Manager, summarizes some of the ways you can take advantage of the unseasonably nice winter weather we’ve been experiencing, here in northeast Ohio & greater Cleveland, that will give us a jumpstart on our overall landscaping & gardening plans.

  • Clean Up: Zach says clean-up is the first thing he has begun doing to his own lawn. Removing dead leaves, branches, and other debris like acorns & garbage from the winter winds from your lawn, flower beds and gardens are musts to be done, improve the look of your home for the remainder of winter, and provide a clean base for you to build upon come this spring.
  • Pruning: Winter days are the ideal time to prune dormant trees and shrubs. Being bare of any type of foliage, the branches and plants’ structure are easy to see and thus easier to properly prune which promotes its strength and health.
  • General Maintenance: In addition to pruning, other general maintenance that can be accomplished include bed edging, gravel and paver work, topsoil & yard grading, laying down mulch & the prepping of surfaces & materials for your landscaping hardscape.
  • Concrete: When landscaping designs include the need for concrete services, rather it be repairing cracked concrete, removing old concrete slabs, concrete leveling, or pouring a stamped concrete patio for example, weather permitting on a particular day, these things can be accomplished in the winter. By the way, at Paraprin Construction, we pour concrete too!
  • Planting Trees: So long as the ground isn’t frozen or covered in snow, many types of trees can be planted in the winter. Among them, evergreens such as pines, spruce, and fir can be planted as well as many deciduous trees such as maple, oak and dogwood.  Be sure to research on your own or contact a trusted local landscaping company about your specific tree species before planting them in the winter for information and techniques specific to that particular tree.
  • Prep & Begin Large Projects: Larger projects, ie: those like concrete that we’ve discussed, have aspects that can be completed in the winter. Landscape lighting, for example, is another project you can do in the winter along with paver walkways, gravel, mulch, landscaping rock formations, flower beds, garden design, and more – you can accomplish tons towards having the beautiful yard you desire by chopping away at it now.  Remember, doing your research and consulting with the best landscaping contractors in the area about best practices, plants, materials, and techniques are greatly encouraged to ensure the best results are achieved.

Have any questions about your landscape, our landscaping services, or simply seeking advice – call or text, Zach James, at 440-596-0733.  Zero obligations! Free quotes!

Paraprin Construction, a division of Paraprin Capital Principal, focuses on new home construction, concrete services, landscaping, and renovation throughout greater Cleveland including, but not limited to Lakewood, Rocky River, Westlake, Avon, Avon Lake, North Ridgeville, Sheffield, Sheffield Lake, Lorain, Elyria, Bay Village, North Olmsted, Olmsted Falls, Amherst, Vermillion, Huron, Sandusky and more.

Investing in Landscaping Means Adding Value to Your Home

Investing in Landscaping Means Adding Value to Your Home

Ensuring you’re getting a worthy return and appropriate value on your money is at the core of deciding where to invest and spend it. When it comes to landscaping and gardening, some see it as a luxury with the singular purpose of adding more curb appeal by making the outside of your home more aesthetically pleasing. The most astute homeowners & the best landscaping companies understand it’s much more than that. It adds character, uniquity & coziness to your home, creates outdoor living spaces for you & your family to enjoy, provides privacy and shade, can reduce energy costs by providing natural insulation and cooling. & perhaps most important – it adds value to your property.

In fact, a study by Virginia Tech found that a beautiful landscape, depending on design and layout, can add up to 15% value to your home & greatly affect the way others perceive its value. That’s astonishing to think about. If you have a property valued at $100k, its value could increase to $115k by investing in landscaping.  A $300k home to $345k, a $500k home to $575k, and so on – that’s phenomenal!

Landscaping design can vary in size, scale, and complexity. You can do things on the simpler side such as bush trimming & regular lawn maintenance to more nuanced projects like a complete backyard design that includes paver walkways, sprinkler system installation, and a stamped concrete patio. There are more moderate upgrades that can be made too like sod installation or landscaping around a pool. Point being, no matter what your landscaping cost and scale, you will get a return on your investment in the form of adding additional proportional value to your home.

Some folks, depending on their level of knowledge, experience and the size of their plans may elect to take on the project themselves. For the rest of us, hiring the best landscaping contractors in the area is the best way to help ensure you achieve the desired look of your property and return on your investment.

If you’re in and around Lorain, Huron, Sandusky, Westlake, Rocky River, Hudson, Avon, Avon Lake, Cleveland, Sheffield, Lakewood, and surrounding areas – Paraprin Construction is the northeast Ohio landscaping company you can trust no matter how big or small your yard and total lawn care needs are.

Four Reasons Why You Should Chose a Concrete Driveway over Asphalt

Four Reasons Why You Should Chose Concrete over Asphalt for Your Driveway

When considering driveway replacement or deciding what type of driveway to install for your new home construction there are many options to consider including pavers, gravel, stamped concrete driveways, turf and brick, but the two most frequently considered come down to asphalt and concrete driveways.

In areas of extreme heat asphalt can soften, become gooey & sticky and thus suffer from durability issues.  In areas way up north, where extreme cold is the norm, concrete can more easily crack creating a scenario where aesthetics and strength decline.  However, for the rest of us, including folks like us from Westlake, Cleveland, Avon Lake, Elyria, Sheffield, Sandusky, Huron, Amherst, and basically all of northeast Ohio where we have mostly moderate temperatures, pouring concrete sidewalks, floors, basements, walkways, and especially driveways is the best way to go.

While there are advantages to each type of driveway, Keith Oberg Jr. – Lead Project Manager of Concrete Services for Paraprin Construction – broke down four reasons why concrete construction is the best option even though concrete cost per yard can be slightly more than asphalt – and here’s why:

  1. Durability: When comparing the two materials, concrete is more durable & long-lasting compared to asphalt. While with good and frequent maintenance asphalt can last up to 30-years, concrete can withstand heavy loads, resist cracking, settling and other forms of damage throughout its lifespan which can last 50-years or more.
  2. Low Maintenance: Asphalt, to squeeze out as much lifespan as possible, needs constant and regular maintenance to protect it from damage caused by weather, sunlight, chemicals, and regular usage. Poured concrete driveways, on the other hand, require minimal maintenance to achieve maximum longevity. Additionally, driveway resurfacing, concrete leveling, concrete epoxy and other materials and techniques can be used to repair the surface & extend its utility to the maximum.
  3. Customization: While asphalt can be coated with different colors of sealants, concrete can be customized in many styles with a multitude of techniques to fit the look of any home or business. Stamped concrete, texturing, and stained concrete can help tell your home’s story, improve its appearance and, perhaps most importantly, add to its value. Additionally, a concrete overlay can be applied over an existing concrete surface to give it a fresh new look.
  4. Environmentally Friendly: While some chemicals are used in producing concrete, the primary ingredients tossed around in the cement mixer are cement, water, air, sand, and gravel. Conversely, asphalt requires petroleum products to produce and maintain & cannot be recycled at the end of its useful life. Recycled concrete can be turned into the base for roads, driveways, parking lots, backfill material and shoulder stone.

If you have a cracked concrete driveway looking for repair, looking to pour a brand-new driveway, or have any other concrete projects you need done, hiring a reliable, experienced, and trusted professional concrete contractor is your best option to ensure the longevity, durability, and aesthetic appeal is all maximized.
